About Us

We are teachers and computer scientists who are passionate about empowering girls of color!

BRIGHT-CS team

BRIGHT-CS was created by…

Dr. Ryoko Yamaguchi, a social scientist, former special education teacher, and most importantly, a parent of a 9th grader in Arlington Public Schools in Virginia. Her research focuses on increasing opportunities for underserved students. This project was inspired by her daughter’s experiences in middle school.

Dr. Jamika Burge, a computer scientist with over 15 years of experience. She is nationally recognized for her work on inclusive computing.

Dr. Jim Egenrieder, an engineering education and natural resources professor with over 20 years of experience teaching STEM, including in Arlington Public Schools in Virginia. He currently directs the Thinkabit Lab at Virginia Tech’s campus at West Falls Church Metro.

Veronica Madrigal, a former middle school teacher and researcher. Her passion is helping girls and students of color reach their full potential.
